Turkey has embarked on a major renewable energy and energy efficiency program
August 11, 2011

Strategically positioned at the crossroads of Europe, Asia and the Middle East, Turkey has embarked on a major renewable energy and energy efficiency program. The country aims to increase its clean energy share to 30 % of its power supply by 2023 - the 100th anniversary of the Turkish republic. With over $40 billion in investment expected in this area by 2020, companies see major business development opportunities in solar, wind and all elements of energy efficiency. Turkey forecasts 6 to 8 % annual growth in energy demand through 2020, with an expected addition of 50,000 MW to the grid. The projects will be funded by public and private sector investment.

Turkish Wind Power Capacity to Grow 31.6% a Year Until 2014
June 20, 2011

Turkey’s wind power capacity will grow at an annual average rate of 31.6 percent until 2014, outpacing the growth of overall renewable energy capacity in the country, according to researcher, Research and Markets. Wind power generation will become a highly competitive industry, thus creating business opportunities for manufacturing and material innovations, the Dublin-based researcher said in an e-mailed statement today.
According to Hasan Koktas, Head of the Ankara-based agency, Turkey’s energy regulator may give licenses for 2,277MW of new wind power plants. Turkey had 50,475MW of total power capacity in May, according to the government’s power transmission company Teias. The government aims for 20,000MW of wind power capacity by 2020, about one quarter of the total capacity then, Koktas said.

Siemens mulls wind turbine blade production facility in Turkey
June 20, 2011

Germany’s Siemens AG, one of the world’s biggest manufacturers of wind turbines, may establish a wind tribune rotor blade production facility in Turkey provided that demand for wind energy in Turkish markets continues at its current pace, said Siemens Turkey CEO Hüseyin Gelis.

Turkey has huge potential for wind power, with estimates ranging from 50,000 to as high as 150,000 megawatts in electricity generation. Such potential for wind energy, together with new legislation on the horizon, offers great opportunities for foreign investors interested in expanding into renewable energy markets of fast-growing economies such as Turkey.

Global players wanting to sell equipment, technology and expertise are also showing interest in the Turkish market. American renewable energy developer Renewable Energy Systems (RES), Russia’s state nuclear unit Rosatom, Hamburg-based REpower Systems AG and Denmark’s Vestas are the most recent examples.

Turkey currently has 980 wind energy plants; 200 of them were deployed last year. Gelis says the demand for wind energy is on the rise in Turkey.

GE Adds eSolar and Wind to Natural Power Plant Design in Turkey
June 7, 2011

General Electric wants to be a big renewable energy player but doesn't want to give up building fossil fuel power plants. This results to the first hybrid project announced by GE and its customer, MetCap Energy Investments, on Tuesday to build a 530 MW power plant in Turkey. The project will include 50 MW of concentrating solar thermal energy production and 22 MW of wind.

eSolar CEO, John Van Scoter, called the GE deal “transformational for the whole energy industry.” Under ideal conditions, the hybrid plant can get over 70 percents efficiency. MetCap expects to start construction later this year and complete the project in 2015. The project will cost 400 million euros, Metin said.

Vestas Competes With Enercon, Nordex for Turkey Wind-Power Sales
June 6, 2011

Vestas Wind Systems A/S, the world's largest wind-turbine maker, will compete with Enercon GmbH and Nordex SE for market share in Turkey as the government awards more wind-power licenses, said Mehmet Ali Neyzi of Vestas.
"Vestas is the biggest wind turbine supplier in Turkey with about 30 percent market share," Neyzi said in an interview. "Now that the government has paved the way for new licenses after a suspension period, competition has started to increase."

A new law guarantees the government will purchase wind power for 7.3 U.S. cents per kilowatt hour. This is attracting investment after three years of lull, Neyzi said. Purchase prices for wind power in Europe are about 9 euro cents (13.15 U.S. cents), he said.

Vestas is studying options to build blades and nacelle casings in Turkey, Neyzi said. "Turkey can be a good manufacturing location with its logistics advantages and quality workforce," he said
